Straight vs Right-Angle Patch Cables: Which Should You Use?

The Two Connector Types, Explained
A straight connector exits the jack at 0 degrees: the cable body points directly away from the pedal face, perpendicular to the panel surface. A right-angle connector exits the jack at 90 degrees instead; the cable body turns parallel to the surface right away and runs along it rather than away from it. Both types use the standard 1/4-inch (6.35mm) TS format, and we consider them electrically interchangeable. As far as the difference goes, it's purely geometric, but we've found that geometry carries real practical consequences once you start wiring a board.
On a tightly packed board, the clearance available around each jack decides whether a given connector type will work at all. A straight connector needs vertical clearance above or beside the jack so the cable can exit cleanly. A right-angle connector needs lateral clearance along the board surface instead, and usually less of it, since the cable profile stays low and flat. In many tight layouts we've built, a right-angle connector is the only type that physically fits without forcing the cable into an awkward bend.
Why Right-Angle Connectors Work Best for Tight Layouts
We default to right-angle connectors for most pedal-to-pedal connections because they keep the board profile low and fit in spaces where a straight connector simply can't. When you mount pedals side by side on a flat board with adjacent jacks only a few inches apart, a right-angle patch cable connects those jacks with a short, flat arc that adds almost no height to the board. The connection stays compact and clean, and it needs no vertical clearance beyond the height of the connector body itself.
Make that same connection with straight connectors and you need enough vertical space for the cable to exit both jacks and arc between them. On a compact board with pedals close together, the cable has to arch upward and come back down; a larger loop that eats up more space, may snag adjacent pedals or their controls, and leaves a more prominent cable presence sitting on the board surface. Right-angle connectors solve all of this in a single design decision, which is part of why we reach for them by default.
How Right-Angle Connectors Reduce Stress on Your Jacks
A cable you attach with a straight connector acts as a lever arm. The mass of the cable hangs off the tip of the straight plug, and gravity applies a constant rotational force, torque, to the jack body. In a worst-case scenario, say a longer or heavier cable, that torque can loosen the jack's mounting nut, stress the solder joint inside the pedal, or work the connector loose over time, which produces intermittent contact or complete signal loss.
A right-angle connector changes that mechanical geometry fundamentally. Because the cable exits the jack parallel to the board surface, its mass distributes along the surface instead of hanging off the jack tip, and that dramatically cuts down the torque hitting the jack body. This is one of the main reasons experienced pedalboard builders default to right-angle connectors for in-chain connections; it isn't only about clearance, it's about protecting the mechanical integrity of the pedal jacks over years of use and transport. In our experience hand soldering cables day in and day out, we see far fewer worn-out jacks on boards wired this way.
When Straight Connectors Are the Right Choice
Straight connectors earn their place in specific situations. The first is when a pedal's jack sits in an orientation that makes a right-angle connector awkward. For example, pedals with jacks on the top face rather than the side, or jacks that point in a direction where a right-angle connector would force the cable to route backward. In these cases a straight connector gives you a natural exit angle that a right-angle simply can't.
The second situation shows up at the edges of the chain: the first connection (from your guitar cable or from a board input jack) and the last connection (to your amp or a board output jack). Standard instrument cables use straight plugs, so matching that with a straight connector at the board's input and output jacks gives you a clean, direct connection. Force a right-angle patch connector into these spots where a straight instrument cable is about to plug in, and you often create a geometric mismatch that puts the instrument cable's plug at an awkward angle.
Mixing Both Types on a Single Pedalboard
Most well-organized pedalboards we've come across use both connector types strategically. The common convention is right-angle connectors for all horizontal pedal-to-pedal connections through the middle of the chain, and straight connectors at the board's input and output edges where standard instrument cables connect. Some connections benefit from a right-angle on one end and a straight on the other; for example, when one pedal's jack orientation makes a right-angle awkward while the neighboring pedal's jack clearly wants one. As a result, we tell customers to decide connection by connection rather than applying a blanket rule to the whole board.
When you plan a cable order, we suggest going through each connection individually. For each pair of jacks, look at the clearance available, the direction each cable needs to exit, and whether adjacent pedal knobs or switches constrain where the connector can sit. Note the connector angle you need at each end (right-angle both ends, straight both ends, or mixed) and include that specification when you order. Keeping a few spare cables of each type on hand lets you make substitutions when the planned angle doesn't fit as well in practice as it did on paper.
Practical Buying Guide: What to Order
For a typical compact pedalboard with five to ten pedals in a single or double row, we recommend right-angle connectors at both ends of all internal connections. In practice that means ordering right-angle patch cables in a range of lengths: 6-inch cables for adjacent same-row connections, 8- to 12-inch cables for cross-row or more widely spaced connections. We'd also order at least one or two cables with a straight connector on one end, for the connections where the geometry specifically calls for it.
When you order custom or hand-soldered cables, specify the connector angle at each end explicitly. State 'right-angle on both ends,' 'straight on both ends,' or 'right-angle on one end, straight on the other' for each cable individually. That specificity gets you a set of cables matched to your board instead of a generic set that forces compromise. Simply put, the extra effort in the order process pays you back immediately with a cleaner, lower-profile, more maintainable board.
